What this does and does not do
It assumes a steady return every year, steady contributions, and no withdrawals before retirement. Real markets do none of those things. The withdrawal figure is a teaching benchmark drawn from historical studies of US portfolios — not a guarantee, and not advice about your own plan.
Taxes are not modelled. Money in a pre-tax account is taxed when withdrawn, while after-tax (Roth-type) contributions are taxed up front — which changes what a given balance is actually worth to spend.
